Sea Buckthorn Smoothie

When dealing with area of nutrition in relation to content of nutrients in foods, there is an unhealthy debate about vitamin C going on these days. The fact is that it is one of the most explored substances in food whatsoever. This is for many reasons that we don´t have to deal with today.

Let´s turn our attention to getting this vitally important vitamin into our body, and at the best in purely natural form. Most of the world increases its intake in a synthetically manufactured form, which is the thing we will definitely avoid today.

So why don´t we get down to preparation of its liquid form that will involve high nutritional potential as well as great taste.


Before we start mixing this creamy fruit drink, it is necessary to soak dried sea buckthorn in „water bath“ for a couple of hours. Once the sour sea buckthorn berries get softer, we can start.

We put an apple chopped into pieces into a mixing bowl, there we pour „soaked“ sea buckthorn berries, we add about a third of a teaspoonful of ground ginger and we pour this mixture with juice from one bigger orange and a half of a lemon. When we have all ingredients together, we can start mixing. A hand blender will create in a while thick sweet-sour drink winning us over its citrus freshness that is accompanied by sweet taste of an apple and nice warming effect of ground ginger.

  1. As today´s coctail is mostly made up of fruit and we didn´t use any „tricks“ in a form of cereals or protein concentrate, there is no use assessing the ratio of macronutrients. Let´s say that we have high saccharide food with dominance of simple forms of sugar and quite a nice amount of fibre.

  2. Luckily, the final value of the glycemic index of the drink ranges in lower levels.

  3. We should be interested, above all, in the content of micronutrients. What I mean is mainly the presence of the above discussed vitamin C and the spectrum of the phytochemicals that can support the effect of vitamin C in the body.

  4. Digestibility of the coctail is at a good level thanks to a higher ratio of the soluble form of fibre.

  5. The amount of energy in the whole portion is literally dietary - a powerful kind of information for a plenty of consumers.

  7. As for the acid base balance, we´ve prepared moderately acidifying smoothie.

  8. I would choose the coctail as a part of sweet breakfast or snack, the presence of antioxidants in the lead with vitamin C will kick up our mental and physical activities.
